Sponsor Couple®
Listen, Share
and Encourage
A Sponsor Couple® is a married couple trained to accompany engaged couples as they prepare for the lifelong vocation of Christian marriage. Through conversation, shared experience, and witness, the Sponsor Couple® model helps engaged couples develop the understanding and skills needed to build a healthy marriage.
This is a peer-to-peer ministry—one married couple walking with another—not a classroom or lecture-based program.
What Is Sponsor Couple® Ministry?
As a Sponsor Couple®, you invite an engaged couple into your home—or meet virtually—for a series of guided conversations using the For Better & For Ever® workbook. These conversations typically take place over five or more meetings and focus on dialogue, reflection, and mutual learning.
Your role is not to teach or evaluate, but to:
- Listen
- Share your lived experience of marriage
- Encourage honest conversation
- Model healthy dialogue
Sponsor Couple® teams consistently report that this ministry strengthens their own marriage, often as much as it benefits the engaged couples they serve.
A Peer-to-Peer Approach
The Sponsor Couple® model is intentionally peer-based. Authority does not come from expertise or credentials, but from lived experience and credibility as a married couple striving to live Christian marriage faithfully.
This approach:
- Avoids a “teacher–student” dynamic
- Creating a safe, non-threatening environment
- Encourages engaged couples to take ownership of their growth
- Helps couples believe, “If they can do this, so can we.”
What Sponsor Couple® teams
Do and Don’t Do
Within this relationship, a Sponsor Couple® has a clear and intentional scope — supporting dialogue and growth, while leaving judgments about a couple’s readiness for marriage to the pastor. Here’s what that looks like in practice.
Engaged couples are referred to a Sponsor Couple® after their pastor has determined they are free to marry in the Church.
Sponsor Couple® teams do:
- Accompany couples through structured dialogue
- Share both joys and challenges of married life
- Adapt conversations to the needs of each couple
- Encourage continued growth after the wedding
Sponsor Couple® teams do not:
- Decide whether a couple should be married
- Replace the role of the pastor or clergy
- Act as counselors or therapists
- Present themselves as “experts”
Follow-Up Beyond the Wedding
Sponsor Couple® ministry does not end on the wedding day.
Sponsor Couple® teams are encouraged to reconnect with the newly married couple during the first year of marriage, typically around:
- Three months after the wedding
- Six months after the wedding
These follow-up conversations are informal and relational—focused on how the couple is doing and how marriage is unfolding in real life. Many Sponsor Couple® teams develop long-term friendships with the couples they accompany.
Who Makes a Good Sponsor Couple® ?
- Are willing to serve as co-learners, not instructors
- Are committed to dialogue and ongoing growth
- Are willing to follow the For Better & For Ever® process as designed
- Are open to long-term accompaniment, including follow-up after the wedding
Training & Support
Sponsor Couple® training is provided at no cost and is conducted via Zoom.
- Guided preparation (homework)
- A live Zoom session (typically under two hours)
- Ongoing access to resources and support
Training is available in English and Spanish, with culturally appropriate terminology (e.g., pareja apadrinadora).
Why Sponsor Couple® Teams Matter
Marriage preparation is most effective when couples are accompanied — not instructed.
Sponsor Couple® ministry:
- Forms engaged couples for lifelong marriage
- Strengthens the marriages of those who serve
- Provides ongoing support beyond the wedding
- Reflects the Church’s call to “walk with” couples
It is one of the most meaningful ways married couples can serve the Church—without leaving their home.
Whether you are single, dating, or engaged, now is the right time to begin learning the skills of lifelong love.
Marriage thrives not on good intentions alone, but on daily practices of dialogue, commitment, and growth.
For Better & For Ever® exists to help you take those first steps—with honesty, clarity, and hope.
