Marriage
Preparation
Preparation for Lifelong Vocation of Faithful Marriage
Marriage preparation in the Catholic Church is not a single event—it is a process of formation that helps couples freely, knowingly, and maturely enter the lifelong covenant of marriage.
The Church teaches that preparing for marriage begins long before engagement and continues well beyond the wedding day. Through For Better & For Ever®, couples are invited into a process of reflection, dialogue, and accompaniment that supports this lifelong vocation.
Marriage is a Vocation
Marriage is not simply a legal contract or romantic commitment. It is a vocation — a call to holiness lived through an exclusive, permanent partnership of life and love.
Canon Law affirms that pastors and parishes are responsible for ensuring couples receive the formation they need to:
- Understand the meaning of Christian marriage
- Freely and responsibly consent to its lifelong obligations
- Grow in holiness as spouses and parents
- Receive continued support after the wedding
Marriage preparation, therefore, is not “too little and too late,” but part of the Church’s ongoing pastoral care of families.
A Lifelong Path of Preparation
The Church describes marriage preparation as unfolding in three stages:
Remote Preparation
Begins in childhood and adolescence through family life, education, and faith formation. Children learn about marriage primarily by observing how relationships are lived in their own families.
Proximate Preparation
Takes place in young adulthood and during courtship. This stage focuses on:
- Healthy relationships
- Communication and dialogue
- Understanding family of origin
- Discernment of vocation
For Better & For Ever® was redesigned to give special attention to these areas, helping couples understand how their personal histories shape their relationship.
Immediate Preparation
Occurs after engagement and before the wedding. This stage is not about introducing new content, but about:
- Deepening understanding
- Practicing dialogue
- Spiritual and liturgical preparation
- Accompaniment by a Sponsor Couple®
Why Marriage Preparation
Matters Today
The Church recognizes that many couples’ approach marriage without fully understanding its lifelong nature or the skills required to sustain it.
Cultural pressures, weakened family structures, and limited exposure to healthy marriages make formation more essential than ever. Research consistently shows that strong marriages are foundational to faith formation, family stability, and parish vitality.
Marriage preparation helps couples move beyond romantic ideals toward realistic, mature, and faithful commitment.
Formation Through Dialogue and Accompaniment
At the heart of marriage preparation is dialogue—the ability to listen, speak honestly, and grow together. Couples preparing for marriage are invited to:
- Reflect on their expectations and assumptions
- Understand differences shaped by family of origin
- Practice communication skills essential for lifelong partnership
- Learning that commitment alone is not enough—skills must be practiced
This formation is most effective when couples are accompanied by trained married couples who witness the joys and challenges of marriage lived faithfully.
Preparation Does Not End at the Wedding
Canon Law is clear: marriage preparation continues after the wedding.
The early years of marriage are a critical time of adjustment, growth, and vulnerability. Ongoing accompaniment during this period helps couples:
- Integrate what they have learned
- Strengthening their relationship
- Navigate real-life challenges
- Build habits of communication and reflection
Parishes using the Sponsor Couple® approach intentionally include this follow-up as part of marriage preparation, not as an optional extra.
A Path Forward
for Parishes and Couples
For Better & For Ever® offers parishes a practical way to live out the Church’s vision for marriage preparation by:
- Supporting couples before and after the wedding
- Engaging married couples in meaningful ministry
- Strengthening families across generations
- Aligning parish practice with Canon Law and pastoral teaching
Marriage preparation is not simply about readiness for a wedding day—it is about forming couples for a lifetime.
